General Ultrasound

Indications

Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound to investigate:

What is a General Ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create moving pictures of organs, blood vessels and soft tissues. A small handheld probe is moved over your skin with a warm gel so the sound travels well and the returning echoes are turned into real‑time images. There is no radiation, it is painless, and it is very safe.

What Can I Expect During the Ultrasound?

You’ll lie on a bed while the sonographer applies warm gel and gently moves the probe over the area of interest. You may be asked to change position, hold your breath briefly, or point to where it hurts. Some pressure may be felt, especially over tender areas, but most people find it comfortable. Most scans take 20–40 minutes.

What Are the Risks of the Test?

Ultrasound is very safe and uses no radiation. Side effects are rare; occasionally there is mild temporary discomfort from probe pressure.
